Cold dips, deep chats, these women are onto something…
Before the rest of Wānaka stirs, a convoy of headlights winds its way down to the lake. Car doors creak open in the cold morning air, and the cheerful chorus of greetings begins, rugged up in puffer jackets, beanies pulled low, breath misting in the dark.
Welcome to the Chilled Chicks.
Jackets drop to the shore, almost ceremonially. The group wades in together. No shrieks, no fanfare. Just the quiet, rhythmic sound of women walking calmly into an ice-cold lake at dawn. Faithful dogs watch from the shallows, their little light-up collars glowing in the dark like tiny cheerleaders.
Shoulder-deep and smiling, that's when the talking starts. Catch-ups, big conversations, nothing off-limits. For a few minutes, time stops and it's just these women, this water, and each other.
Then, as quickly as it began, they're out. Towels, jackets, goodbyes and everyone heads off into the day.
So what keeps them coming back, week after week?
They put it down to three things:
1. The Wim Hof Method
Cold water immersion isn't just a buzz, it's backed by science. Regular cold dips can boost circulation, sharpen mental clarity, reduce inflammation, strengthen the immune system, and flood your body with feel-good endorphins. It's a hard reset in under ten minutes.
2. A daily hit of nature
Watching the seasons turn from the water's edge, autumn leaves drifting past, spring light breaking early, keeps you genuinely connected to the world around you. This ritual is a reminder that you're part of something bigger.
3. Real, unshakeable connection
For every member, this daily ritual is non-negotiable. Whether you're retired, busy, or somewhere in between, showing up for something hard alongside other people builds a bond that's difficult to replicate. Doing tough things together makes it easier to share the tough stuff, and these women are there for all of it. They even catch up over a chin-wag outside the water once a month.
It's clear the Chilled Chicks are getting far more than just the cold water buzz. And honestly? We're a little inspired.
