Why sheepskin works in summer.

Most people pack sheepskin away with the winter woollies, but summer is when sheepskin earns its title as a wonder fibre. Cooling, versatile and hardwearing, here’s why we will be packing ours on our summer adventures.

Is sheepskin hot in summer?

Every wool fibre has a natural crimp, a gentle spring that creates thousands of tiny air pockets. In winter those pockets hold your warmth close. In summer they let air move, so heat drifts away from your skin, cooling you, instead of building up underneath you.

Synthetics work the other way. Polyester and acrylic trap heat and moisture against your skin until you’re peeling yourself off them. Sheepskin lets both go, which is why it’s the coolest seat on a warm afternoon.

Synthetics heat up. Sheepskin breathes.

Then there’s moisture. Wool can take in around a third of its own weight in moisture vapour before it feels damp. On a sticky day, sheepskin draws sweat away from your skin and releases it into the air. You stay dry and comfortable. Synthetics do the opposite, holding heat and moisture against you until you’re peeling yourself off them.

Scientists call it temperature regulation, we call it the magic of natural fibres.
It works the same way whatever shape it takes. A Floor Rug that stays soft and cool underfoot on a warm night. A Shaggy Bean Bag on the deck you can still sink into as you watch the sun set.

Easy care

Don’t want to spend your precious summer days cleaning? We’ve got you.

Lanolin, the natural oil in the fleece, helps it shrug off dust and light spills, and it’s naturally antimicrobial, so it stays fresh in the heat. Give it a shake and it’s ready for tomorrow. For a deeper clean, head to our care guide, here.

One rug, endless uses. Here’s how to use your sheepskin in summer:

Summer means sunny days, road trips, camping, beach adventures – it also means a lot of stuff.  Boot loads, cupboard loads, garage loads of stuff – often made from synthetic materials, hot and sticky as the weather heats up and often unusable after a few summers.

The same Sheepskin Rug, you snuggled into over the winter months, is now your summer companion.  Light enough to carry, soft enough for anywhere, and ready for whatever the day turns into.

The picnic.

Throw it over the grass and you’ve got the softest seat in the park. No prickles, no damp patches, no sticky legs. We recommend: The Sexto, The Quarto.

The deck.

Drape it over a wooden bench or a chair that’s been in the sun all afternoon, and it’s suddenly the spot everyone wants. We recommend: The One + Half, The Double, The Single.

The camping trip.

Roll it into the boot. A seat by the fire, then an extra layer under your sleeping bag when the night cools off.  We recommend: The Quarto, The Double.

Wherever summer takes you, there’s a spot for sheepskin.  It’s cool when the days are long and cosy when the nights draw in, and it’ll still be going long after this summer’s synthetics have been binned.
