How to Choose the Perfect Sheepskin Rug Size for a King Bed

Cold bedroom floors are challenging in the morning. Make it easier to get out of bed on those early mornings by putting down a rug that's large enough to give your feet a soft landing. Even if you have wall-to-wall carpeting, you can layer on a cozy rug under your bed to muffle sound and add color, texture, and pattern to your space.

What are the dimensions of a king size bed?

King size mattresses are the same length as a Queen, but with a little bit more width - sometimes a little extra space goes a long way. The King size is ideal for pet owners or parents with children as it provides you extra space and comfort. The dimensions of a standard king size bed in New Zealand are around 203cm long and 165cm wide.

How do you measure a rug for a king size bed?

Typically when you place a rug under a bed that is placed against a wall, you want it to extend on the two sides and the foot of the bed by at least 30cm. If your bed is in the centre of the room, then you’ll want a larger rug that extends on all four sides of the bed. Pay attention to where your bedside tables are and if you can open the drawers - 20cm in front of the bedside tables from the headboard wall is a good guideline.

What the ideal rug size for a standard king size bed?

A general rule of thumb suggests that an area rug should always extend at least 18 inches to 24- inches from the sides and from the foot of a queen-size and a king-size bed.

There are two things that you always need to consider when deciding which sized rug to pair with your king size bed:

The size of your room

Since the king size bed is relatively large in size, you need to match it with an adequately sized room. Both need to be proportionate with each other. If the room is too small, furnishing a rug alongside the bed might not work if you want to maintain the integrity of the space.

The size of your rug

Similarly, the size of your rug also needs to complement the scale of your bed. While most rug sizes work with the king size bed, some might be considered a little too small.

Sometimes – especially when you’re layering rugs or featuring them at an angle – you need to consider the orientation as well. For example, which side of the bed you can use to feature more of the rug and which one needs more floor coverage.

What size rug should go under a California king bed?

A 3.5m by 4.5m rug will look balanced under the longer California king size bed, and this size area rug will even fit under nightstands.

How do you put a rug under a king bed?

With a larger rug, you might try turning the bed in a vertical direction. This gives you a nice border on either side of the bed for your landing pad, but also a longer portion of the rug to extend out beyond the bed. It’s a nice place for a bench or some throw pillows for your kids to lounge and watch TV from the foot of your bed.

Another option for your bedroom is rather than having a rug that extends beneath the bed, have two rugs on either side.. You can opt for a regular shape or go for some of the irregular but super comfy sheepskin rugs.

You want your rug to extend out from three sides of your bed. The two long sides and the foot side. The only way that might be different is if your bed floats in the center of your room. In this case, you might want it even larger to extend on all four sides of the bed, being sure to leave a perimeter of space between the wall and the rug on all four sides.

Now that you’ve looked at your options, hopefully you have a clear idea of how to set up your king size bed and rug combination. Whether you’re going vertically, horizontally, or choose to do side rugs will dictate the rugs you purchase for your bedroom. All of them are correct, so now it’s simply down to a matter of personal taste.

How do you tell if a rug is too big for a bedroom?

Sheepskin Area Rug

The number one mistake for most people is getting a rug that is too small. The size of an area rug can dramatically alter the room's overall effect. A rug that is too small for your space can cause the room to feel uninviting, while a rug that is too large for the room can make it feel smaller. The right sized area rug will bring warmth and balance to the room, creating the perfect finishing touch.

Does a large rug make a room look smaller?

Finding the perfect size rug for a room can be tricky, you don't want one that is too big or too small, but just right! If a rug is too small, it will appear as if it is floating in the room. If it is too large it will overpower the room and make the room appear smaller than it is.

Should curtains and rugs match?

Your curtains and rugs don't have to be a perfect color match. It's best if they both are in a color family together, but they can also be complementary colors or share a neutral color palette. You can even choose a curtain/rug combo based on shared textures or patterns.

Many get hung up on color matching, getting an exact shade match. This is probably the most common frustration. Relax …. colors should not match exactly. The golden rule – stick with similar hues and it will all work out perfectly.

Should your rug match your walls?

Don’t spend hours trying to match colors exactly. It doesn’t happen in nature, and if you try too hard, you’ll end up with an artificial look. One trick designers use often, especially when doing a room from scratch or re-doing a room, is to start with a rug and pull the color choices from there. If you're afraid to go bold with color, start small. A tribal rug is a great beginning, they go with everything. Over-time, you will discover a favorite color in it and you can match that color with the walls or vice versa. The great thing about rugs with a lot of color and design elements is that you are not locked into any one aspect and you can change up the color of the walls several times over the life of the rug.
